Has Your Life Been Affected By Someone Else's Drinking?

Alateen Can Help

Alateen meetings

Alateen groups provide a safe environment for teens to freely share their ideas and experiences with members of their own peer group in order to gain a better understanding of alcoholism. They learn to accept alcoholism as an illness, and so lessen its impact on their lives. By removing their preoccupation with the drinker's behavior, they are better able to focus on their own development and sense of identity.

Alateen Do's and Don'ts

The following are excerpts from the literature piece Alateen
Do's and Don'ts (M-9).

Do's

1. Do remember you are not the only one with an alcoholic parent.

2. Do look for help in Alateen, Al-Anon, AA and other local community councils on alcoholism.

3. Do learn all you can about alcoholism, a family disease.

4. Do be honest with yourself and others.

5. Do use your talents in ways that interest you.

Don'ts

1. Don't cover up for the alcoholic and take on responsibilities other than your own.

2. Don't try to make the alcoholic stop drinking you can't.

3. Don't argue with an active alcoholic.

4. Don't hide or throw out liquor; more is always available.

5. Don't take it personally when the alcoholic blames you for drinking - any excuse will do.

What is Alateen?

Alateen is a fellowship of young Al-Anon members, usually teenagers, whose lives have been affected by someone else's drinking.

Purpose of Alateen

Young People Come Together to:
-share experience, strength and hope with each other

-discuss their difficulties

-learn effective ways to cope with their problems

-encourage one another

-help each other understand the principles of the Al-Anon program

Alateen Members Learn

-compulsive drinking is a disease

-they can detach themselves emotionally from the  drinker's problems while continuing to love the  person

-they are not the cause of anyone else's drinking or behavior

-they cannot change or control anyone but themselves

-they have spiritual and intellectual resources with which to develop their own potentials, no matter what happens at home

-they can build satisfying and rewarding life experiences for themselves

Sponsorship

Every Alateen group needs an active, adult member of Al-Anon to serve as sponsor. The sponsor is an active party of the group, guiding and sharing knowledge of our Twelve Steps and Traditions. Members of Alateen can also choose to have a personal sponsor, who can be another member of Alateen or Al-Anon.

Where Alateens Meet

Alateen members meet in church halls, school rooms or other suitable places (many times in the same building as an Al-Anon group but in a separate room).

Alateen Literature

Members are encouraged to read Al-Anon and Alateen Conference Approved Literature and materials. Written from members' personal sharings, these recovery tools can help them deal with their problems.
